The 21st February is a red letter day in our national life.It is the international Mother Language Day.This day has a great historical importance. The Language Movement of 1952 paves the way to our freedom.On 21st February 1952, some valiant sons of our country laid down their lives for our mother tongue, Bangla.Since then, the day is being observed as the Shaheed Day commemorating the sacrifice of the language martyrs.But since 1999, this day has been recognized by the UNESCO as the International Mother Language Day.However, the 21st February is now observed all over the world as a memorable day.At present many countries in the world observe language day.On the day, they show respect not only to their mother tongue but also to our mother tongue Bangla.On this day people of all classes join processions called 'Probhat Ferry. They put on black badges and go along procession to the Shaheed Minar.They express their respect to the martyrs by offering flowers and wreathes at the foot of the Shaheed Minar.Different academic and cultural institutions and organizations hold various types of cultural programmes about the significance of the day.The newspapers publish special supplements.The TV and radio channels broadcast special programmes highlighting the significance of the day.The sacrifices of the language martyrs are discussed in seminars and programmes.As the day is observed very eventfully, the young generations become aware of the language movement.So, regarding this, the International Mother Language Day or 21st February has a great importance.
