The Pahela Boishakh is the first day of the Bangla new year.This day is celebrated with traditional festivities throughout the country.The occasion of the Pahela Boishakh has become a national celebration for its great importance and significance.People celebrate the day with great joy and enthusiasm.Both men and women wear dress to celebrate the day. They also make pitha and arrange different cultural and entertaining acvities It is a public holiday.In keeping with the age-old tradition, traders and shopkeepers open halkhata and er sweet to their customers and clients.Different socio-cultural organizations celebrate the day with elaborate programmes.Chhayanat, a leading cultural organization, begins the day's first programme at Ramna Batamul at dawn.The national dailies bring out special supplements while Bangladesh Betar and BTV cast special programmes.The students of the IFA of Dhaka University traditionally bring out a colourful procession. There are differences between the urban and rural celebration of the day.In the urban areas, people enjoy concert, folk many types of foods such as panta-hilsha and pitha.But in the rral areas there are many new year fairs e hats and bazars. Farmers, traders and young boys and girls are more interested to celebrate the day.Puppet snow attracts the children most while the adults enjoy stick fighting.People of all ages enjoy circus and merry-go- round.The significance of this day is indescribable.The day reminds us our roots, our millennium-old cultual heritage and our mindset of srularism, tolerance of other's opinions and our multri-cultural outlook which can not be disrupled by religious funaticism.
